The Month in Review for New South Wales

September, particularly 1 September is always a busy time of year for the New South Wales Editorial Team. This year was no exception with many of the statutory instrument repeals going through as planned, as well as many new Acts and new Regulations being passed to replace those being repealed with a total of 363 items being affected by postponement of repeal orders.

In addition, the NSW Parliament also underwent a temporary proroguement between 8 September and 9 September 2014 where all bills were removed from the Business Paper and many not being introduced. In total, 106 bills were reintroduced to the Business Paper not including 2 pro forma Law of Evidence Bills (one for each house) which is the trigger for NSW Parliament to start a new session. In total, the legislative activity for August and September for New South Wales looks as follows:

  • 9 New Acts assented (Numbers 40-48);
  • 119 New Regulations (Numbers 496 - 615);
  • 10 New Bills introduced (other than the 106 returned to the Business Paper);
  • 21 Existing Bills went through Second Reading Debate;
  • 4 Existing Bills were negatived or withdrawn;
  • 5 Existing Bills are awaiting assent; and
  • 61 Existing Bills are currently at Notice of Motion stage awaiting introduction to Parliament.

In total, there were 704 items of legislation affected in New South Wales over the last month in review.
