How the law works FAQs

Developed by the TimeBase legal editors, our Information Resource Centre provides succinct answers to questions like - "What is a regulation?", "What is a bill and how does it become an Act?", and "Where do I find amendments?". This resource is especially popular with new starters, recent graduates and anybody needing a quick refresher on legislation.


New Features/Updates

VIC, ACT, TAS, NT historical versions live

To help users find and view amendments over time, we are constantly adding historical material. Historical versions are now available for VIC, ACT, TAS and NT. Find historical versions in LawOne via the Key info box, and the new Historical versions tab in "View all details" for each legislative item. Check the coverage document for scope.

Get more with an individual login

Create your own account to access additional functionality like alert profiles, favourites and saved searches. Click here to create your own account (using your work email address will help us know you are a subscriber). You will receive an activation email to complete the setup.

New notification and commencement tables

LawOne users can now instantly view Acts or Regulations by year and jurisdiction, with their related notification details and (often!) intricate commencement details. Located in each jurisdiction's Browse menu, under our new heading for Legislative Information, keep an eye out for even more additions as the year progresses…read more.

Goodbye IE9

TimeBase sites will not support Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) after 1 June 2017. Microsoft has not provided security updates or technical support for IE9 since January 2016. For minimum system requirements…read more.
