ACCC Sues Free Range Egg Companies for Misleading Advertising

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission today announced the Perth Federal Court case against C.I & Co Pty Ltd, alleging that from January 2006 to about June 2008 C.I. & Co Pty Ltd sold eggs in cartons with the words "free range eggs" featured prominently on them when they were not.

This incorrect labeling as well as other instances of the same company incorrectly labeling their eggs as “Fresh-Range Omega 3” breaches several sections of the Trade Practices Act including those relating to misleading and deceptive conduct and also falsely representing goods to the public.

With the new rise of “farm fresh” and “free range” products, how important do you think it is we have an accurate labeling system? Do you think the ACCC should be spending its resources on something different?
