Five asylum seekers detained by the former Howard Government have received more than $1 million in compensation.

Payments all relate to people who were unlawfully detained or sustained injuries while in immigration facilities.

The Commonwealth is still facing a significant liability in relation to another 30 outstanding cases out of 247 referred by the ombudsman.
