Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) Finalized: It’s Official

The draft still must undergo legal verification and be submitted to the participating nations for processing, but the text of the draft has finally been completed.

The goal of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is to provide an international framework for combating intellectual property (IP) rights infringement, focusing on the growing concerns in relation to counterfeiting and piracy. The final text includes entitlements to ‘damages’, which allows copyright holders to claim large sums of money from infringers, and also include extra fines, in addition to unpaid licensing fees.

Participating nations include Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States.
