Queensland has appointed a new Solicitor-General after his predecessor resigned from the position back in March 2014. The senior barrister, Peter Dunning QC, of Callinan Chambers in Brisbane was appointed Solicitor-General on Thursday, 10 April 2014.

Dunning is a renowned lawyer and has appeared and advised in all areas of appellate work after being admitted to the Bar in 1992. Dunning has been involved in a number of government inquests and inquiries, including the recent Queensland flood inquiry and the inquest into missing American divers, Tom and Eileen Longeran, who disappeared off the Great Barrier Reef in 1998.

Dunning’s appointment comes after the resignation of his predecessor, Walter Sofronoff QC. Sofronoff was involved in a public altercation with Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie days after his resignation. The altercation concerned a public feud between Bleijie and Court of Appeal president Margaret McMurdo. The altercation also prompted an unsuccessful vote of no confidence against Bleijie on 1 April 2014.
