New Judge Appointed to High Court - Justice Nettle

The Federal Government yesterday (4 December 2014) appointed Justice Geoffrey Nettle as the next justice of the High Court of Australia.

Background to Appointment

Justice Nettle is currently a judge of the Victorian Court of Appeal.

He will replace Justice Susan Crennan, who will leave the High Court in February 2015, five months before her term was due to expire.

Attorney-General George Brandis, in announcing the appointment, said Justice Nettle had enjoyed a brilliant career in law.

He is has previously been a Queen's Counsel and a solicitor.

"I can tell you that in consulting widely in relation to this appointment, Justice Nettle's name came up time and time again as a particularly eminent candidate for appointment to the High Court."
