The New South Wales District Court has seen the appointment of Crown Prosecutor Tanya Bright to its bench. The appointment was announced by NSW Attorney General Gabrielle Upton earlier this week (5-9 December 2016). Furthermore, South Australian Attorney General John Rau also announced the appointments of four new judicial members to the District Court and Local Courts of South Australia.

NSW Appointment

Prior to her appointment, Ms Bright served as Crown Prosecutor for fifteen years. Earlier in her career, Ms Bright served in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution’s special crime group and has also worked as a senior legal officer in the NSW Police Commissioner’s Office. Ms Bright will be sworn in on 31 January 2017 and will replace is Honour Judge Gregory Farmer SC who passed away recently.

Ms Upton spoke highly of Ms Bright saying:

“Ms Bright has a quarter of a century of experience in the law, including 23 years with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions… She has appeared in more than 140 trials, including cases involving manslaughter and sexual assault."

SA Appointments

South Australia will see the appointment of Michael Evans QC to replace Geoffrey Muecke as the District Court’s Chief Judge. Mr Evans has had an illustrious career in the law and is the first person in South Australia to serve as a Crown Advocate who would later take on the role of state Crown Solicitor. Mr. Rau said:

“I have valued and respected Mr Evans’ wisdom and insights and, while sad to see him go, wish him every success in the demanding position of Chief Judge of the District Court.”

The other three appointments are Jane Schammer to the District Court, Anna Jackson as a magistrate of the Local Court and new SA Crown Advocate Chris Bleby SC. “All of the people whose appointments are announced today are candidates of the highest calibre,” Mr Rau said.
