TimeBase unique Point-in-Time research services have taken another innovative step in providing the most comprehensive research tools available in their area by including modification provision links at section level in all their legislation.

What are Modification Provisions?

Modification provisions in legislation are essentially provisions which change depending on which Regulations are being referenced by the provision and depending at which points of time they are being referenced. It can also be considered alterations to the text of the principal instrument that are not permanent or that only apply to particular locations or cases.

Generally, most jurisdictions include these provisions in the endnotes of a piece of legislation, however, there seems to be very little guidance in the legislation as to how to deal with these provisions. So each jurisdiction seems to have their own method of dealing with modification provisions.

At TimeBase, we have found that this endnotes method of dealing with modification provisions can be confusing and doesn't enable section level in-depth research.

How has TimeBase Unique Point-in-Time Changed?

In an innovative step, and keeping in line with TimeBase unique Point-in-Time research capabilities, we have implemented a reference system with links and notes to modification provisions available at section level, with editorial notes explaining the modification changes. This is similar to the links TimeBase currently uses for other related materials helpful for interpretation of a provision of legislation.

The modification provision links also appear on every version of the section which is affected, taking into account the modification provision's start and end dates.

Further Improvements and Innovation

Currently, these modification provision links can be found in our unique Point-in-Time services for Corporations, Income Tax, Intellectual Property, Employment and Crime.

We also have plans to include modification tables on the front pages of these services so finding modification provisions becomes a simple part of day-to-day legal research.
