Review panel calls for changes to GST

Federal independent MP Rob Oakeshott says the states and the Commonwealth need to urgently discuss overhauling the tax system, following the release of a review into the GST.

Both major parties have ruled out changing the Goods and Services Tax, but a review panel has found maintaining the current levels of tax will put increasing pressure on governments to cut services.

The panel's report contains a range of findings and recommendations, including putting the GST on products bought online and changing the first homebuyers scheme.
