Judges want quicker courts: Who's to blame?

In the new Herald Series: 'Behind the Bench' an alarming number of Judges and Magistrates have come out and candidly wished for their courts to operate as quicker and more efficient.

The slow court system has been boiled down to several reasons. One of these is potentially Lawyers. Retired Justice David Kirby stated:

''Nowadays, because the photocopier is available, and because one suspects they [lawyers] get paid according to the page, or they can ultimately claim costs according to the page, there are masses of paper.''

The result is that the Court is inundated with thousands of pages of useless documents.

Other reasons include increases in the Police Force. Chief Magistrate, Graeme Henson explained that more officers mean more arrests which means more cases flooding local courts.
