Support for Pokie Reform

A recent article by the SMH has found overwhelming support for the pokies reform.  Sixty-seven per cent support a mandatory pre-commitment scheme that would require poker machine players to set themselves a spending limit before starting to play, an approach supported by the federal government.

Even more (81 per cent) support a pre-commitment scheme that would give gamblers the option to set a limit in advance. The survey by The Australia Institute shows support for a mandatory scheme is high across all income groups, education levels, Coalition and Labor voters, and states, ranging between 64 per cent and 74 per cent.

The survey was taken between March 23 and April 4, before Clubs Australia and the Australian Hotels Association began a $20 million advertising campaign to block a move by the government to introduce a pre-commitment system.

The gambling industry insists that any scheme be voluntary for players, which would make it ineffective according to other experts.
