BHP Billiton Sued in Class Action Suit For Controversial Gas Mining Techniques

Landowners in the United States have started a class action law suit against BHP Billiton for causing earthquakes, poisoning their water sources and polluting the air and soil in Arkansas. This has resulted from BHP’s new mining methods for the shale gas industry that is soon to be introduced to Australia. 

But the pending litigation has cast an eerie shadow on the emerging $50 billion Queensland and New South Wales coal seam gas industry and has sky-rocketed national concerns for environmental issues. Currently, there is a growing demand for tighter regulation of the mining industry in Australia and the outcome of this lawsuit could very well tip the scale more favourably for supporters of the cause.
