New R18+ rating for video games could happen

The House Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs has strongly endorsed a proposal for new laws to introduce an adult computer game category in Australia.

The proposals to amend the Broadcasting Service Act to introduce the R18+ adult game category were endorsed, were the Committee ensured that the bill's aim was not controversial but rather, "seeks to align the existing classification system for computer games with the system that applies to films."

Adult Computer game importers and players feel that the the lack of an R18+ category in Australia has meant popular games have either had to be blocked from sale here or modified to meet the tamer MA15+ rating.
