The proposed R18+ classification for video games in Australia has passed federal parliament without amendment on the 18 June 2012. Consequently, from January 1, 2013, Australia will have an adult rating for video games.

Federal Minister for Home Affairs and Justice, Jason Clare, stated that ‘these are important reforms over 10 years in the making…The R18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material. The reforms also mean that adults are able to choose what games they play within the bounds of the law."

Accordingly, Australian states and territories will pass their own complementary legislations to ensure that the gaming industry will continue to be appropriately regulated.
