National Disability Insurance Scheme Receives Further Support from COAG

On the 29 November 2012, the Federal Parliament of Australia introduced the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012 with the intention of benefiting more than 20,000 people with disability in Australia, as well as their families and their carers. It will also give people with disability choice and control over the care and support they receive.

As a result of this, the Council of Australian Governments announced that it had signed an intergovernmental agreement for the first stage of a National Disability Insurance Scheme. According to the communique released on the 7 December 2012, there has been agreement between the Commonwealth and the New South Wales Governments to establish the full National Disability Insurance Scheme by the 1 July 2018.

According to Associate Professor Simon Darcy of the University of Technology, Sydney, the COAG agreement is a tremendous starting point for addressing the well-documented unmet need of people with disability.
