Google Given 28 Days to Unmask Bloggers

The South Australian District Court yesterday (16 January 2013) ordered the multi-national corporation to reveal the identities of those who had set up websites critical of former football player so he can sue them.

The South Australian Law Society is quoted as saying that “the ruling proved anonymity provided no immunity from the law” and that "This order could further open the door for claimants who feel they have been defamed online to take action in our courts."

The action against Google was taken over five websites created on its blogger.com network. The action claimed the sites' authors had damaged the former football players career after sport as a CEO and motivational speaker through derogatory statements made on the sites.

While Google had deleted the sites without identifying their authors the court ordered Google do so within 28 days.
