Smokers who light up in Perth city's outdoor malls will now face fines, after the council voted to ban smoking in pedestrian areas, the first council in the state of WA to do so.

The ABC News states that "The council voted unanimously to ban smoking in the Hay Street and Murray Street malls and in Forrest Place after the Works, Urban and Development committee approved the change to local law earlier this month.

Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi says the move will particularly protect young people who frequent the malls.

"Families and especially children are enjoying these spaces more than ever before, and we know that passive smoking is a very big problem," she said."
