ACCC Investigation into Supermarket Duopoly and Unconscionable Conduct

According to an ACCC announcement, they have over 50 complaints against both Woolworths and Coles for unconscionable conduct when dealing with suppliers including claims of supplier bullying.

As written in The Conversation, the ACCC's announcement for unconscionable conduct may be missing the real point of the problem - the effect of a duopoly that holds over 80% of the grocery buying power in Australia.

And the biggest losers in the equation of the industrialised conversation surrounding groceries and food are consumers, who are losing sight of the connection between primary production, and the farmers who keep the animals and grow our food, and the increasingly industrialised products seen on supermarket shelves.

A possible way of creating a challenge to the supermarket duopoly could be through alternative retail spaces encouraging fresh food and interaction between suppliers and consumers through small business enterprise.
