Marine sanctuaries to generate tourism

Tuesday 29 March 2011 @ 11.43 p.m. | Legal Research

The introduction of marine sanctuaries off the South West coast of WA would generate millions of dollars in tourism revenue.

The area has been flagged as the first to receive sanctuary status under a new national network of marine protected zones expected to be released by the Federal Government in the coming weeks.

It's estimated that eco-tourists spend an average of around $6,000 while holidaying in WA, compared to an average of around $3,500 for other visitors.

Sanctuaries play a vital role in attracting tourists, particularly eco-tourists.

This type of tourism is very important to international tourists.
