New marine reserves announced

Friday 16 November 2012 @ 9.07 a.m. | Legal Research

Large areas of ocean will be formally declared as protected areas today - part of a long-running effort to establish the world's largest network of marine reserves.

Also to be announced are details of $100 million compensation for fishers resulting from the impact of the reserves, which will restrict fishing as of July 2014.

The areas cover more than 2.3 million square kilometres along the South Australian, West Australian, NSW and Northern Territory coasts, and include the Coral Sea which sits between the Great Barrier Reef and the edge of Australian waters. The sea is home to dozens of important marine species and coral reefs.

Only some of the new reserves will completely ban fishing. Others will allow recreational fishing, and others still will permit some commercial fishing.
