Law Firm Expectations Working Against Women

Friday 8 February 2013 @ 4.10 p.m. | Legal Research

In a recent panel debate at the Women Legal 2013 conference, questions were raised about societal and law firm attitudes to women who want to achieve career success and still have a family life.

In particular, women on the panel pointed to three factors which would greatly influence the ability of women to have a family and still achieve career success:

1. More part time and flexible work options that do not require the same as a full time work commitment

2. More women at a senior partner level as role models for the next generation of female lawyers

3. More emphasis on the idea of co-parenting rather than just women being solely responsible for the children

This type of debate also brings into question the sustainability of the current work ethic of 24/7 as opposed to a balanced work and family division.
