New Zealand internet troll Tristan Barker has been convicted of assaulting Today Tonight journalist David Eccleston during an interview, and will pay him $440 for emotional harm.

Barker was sentenced in Rotorua District Court after pleading guilty to the assault.

Eccleston was interviewing Barker over his internet trolling when the incident took place in March.

Barker, who now lives in Melbourne, was to be sentenced in August. However, a judge adjourned the case to give him time to complete an anger management course.

His lawyer said that Barker had undertaken counselling and written a letter of apology to Eccleston, fulfilling a police request prior to sentencing.
