Gregory John Parker of the Supreme Court has been appointed by proclamation to be the President of the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, as of 14 November 2013.

The Tribunal was created earlier this year by the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal Act 2013 (No. 59 of 2013), and has jurisdiction to "review certain administrative decisions and to act with respect to certain disciplinary, civil or other proceedings; to confer powers on the tribunal; and for other purposes."

As reported previously by TimeBase, the Tribunal's objectives in exercising its jurisdiction are described in his second reading speech by the Attorney General as:

"... to be accessible to all, especially people with special needs, to ensure efficient and cost effective processes for all parties involved, to act with as little formality and technicality as possible and to be flexible in the way in which it conducts its business."

Mr Parker has been in legal practice since 1990 and Crown Solicitor since early 2010. In 2013, he was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in the provision of legal and industrial advice.

The Tribunal will begin operating next year.
