Commonwealth Attorney-General George Brandis has appointed Ms Kate Jenkins as Australia’s new Sex Discrimination Commissioner. Ms Jenkins will occupy the role for a term of five years.

What is the Sex Discrimination Commission?

The Sex Discrimination Commission, a branch of the Australian Human Rights Commission, undertakes a range of activities to address discrimination, sexual harassment and other barriers to equality. The Commission review existing laws, conduct research, as well as prepare policy advice to this end.

Background to Appointment

At the time of her appointment, Ms Jenkins was the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner and has an outstanding record in advancing gender equality. Prior to this, Ms Jenkins was a partner in employment law at Herbert Smith Freehills. According the press release by the Attorney-General:

“Ms Jenkins has worked closely with a wide range of organisations, including the Victoria Police, to address issues of entrenched discrimination and harassment. Significantly, she established the Victorian Male Champions of Change strategy, building on the national program established by the former Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Elizabeth Broderick. She has also advanced gender equality in all areas of life with a particular focus on diversity in sport, through the Fair Go Sport and Play By the Rule campaigns.”

Ms Jenkins said she plans to consult women "from all walks of life" to work out "where my energies should go" over the next five years in the key role. According to Ms Jenkins, her challenges in 2016 will be domestic violence; women’s poverty in retirement; and women’s economic independence and well-being.
